Oscar Winning Movies are Good Money Spinners in Box Office

Oscar Winning MoviesWinning the Oscar movie award is the dream of every filmmaker. Since 1929 Oscar award has been reigning as the pinnacle of film-making achievement. Oscar is also about good money.

When a movie gets nominated for Oscar its fortunes start changing. As a result, interest in the movie escalates and consequently theatre collections and ancillary sales such as DVD sales shoot up.

In 2012, the Oscar winning movie was The Artist¬. It became the fist silent picture to win the award first time since the Academy Awards ceremony was held in 1929. The Artist has a run time of 100 minutes and was directed by Michel Hazanavicius.

The Artist too had a boost. The picture made half of its total $25 million in the post-nomination period. It is often said Oscar Academy generously rewards box office success. Most of the Oscar winning movies had brilliant commercial success. They include Titanic, Forrest Gump, Gladiator and Return of the King.

In 2010, there was an exception when The Hurt Locker  won the Best Picture award beating top grossing Avatar in its race to the top.

The Oscar award also gives a new lease of life to many low-grossing movies. The Slumdog Millionaire is a good example. It had moderate collections till Oscar nominations in the region of $56 million. After the Oscar honors, it went up to $98 million. When its theatre run was over it raked up another US$43 million, making a total of $141 million.

Similar was the case with The King's Speech in 2011. It won $57 million on nomination day and $114 million on Oscar day and grossed $134 by the time its theater-run was over.
